If you choose to have a home birth, two NHS midwives will come to your home to support you during the birth.
The number of appointments varies, but most women tend to see a midwife three or four times postnatally. For more than half of parents, the key reason for paying for a scan privately was to get detailed 3D and 4D images of their baby.

By Jennie Agg for the Daily Mail. And while for many such scans are a harmless treat, there are serious concerns about whether proper standards are being met — and even how safe extra scans may be. The little girl, who she named Maya, would go on to be delivered prematurely just before 31 weeks, and died six days later in January this year.
While Sarah accepts that ultimately there was nothing anyone could have done to save Maya, she is tormented by the knowledge that she delayed getting medical help because the private scan suggested she had nothing to worry about. I have to live knowing she went another two days without any doctors helping her.

There are a number of different investigations or test which you may need. These include blood tests such as PSA or kidney function tests , urine tests urine dipstick, cytology or PCA3 , X-rays or scans plain X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI scan or bone scan , and endoscopy or telescopic inspection of the bladder flexible cystoscopy.
The most common tests which we need to do are a PSA prostate specific antigen test, or a test to look at the kidney function U and E. We may also need to check your blood count FBC , or in some cases look at your liver or bone function. Usually your blood test will be done at the end of the clinic, but in some cases you may have already had these done at your GP surgery prior to your appointment.
We ask all patients to bring a urine sample with them so that we can test it. This test is called a urine dipstick, and it looks for evidence of blood in the urine, or evidence of infection, amongst other things. This can then be sent off for a urine culture MSU if necessary. For patients with suspected bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer a urine cytology test will be needed.
You will be provided with a small cup to pass urine into for this. PCA3 is a new gene-based test carried out on a urine sample. It may be used in patients with suspected prostate cencer to give more information on the probability of prostate cancer being present. The PCA3 test result is not affected by these conditions. We are delighted to announce that pregnancy ultrasound scans are now available at each of our Cambridge, Colchester and Norwich clinics. As ultrasound scans are such a fascinating topic, we though we would invite Bourn Hall Sonographer Donna White to provide us with some insight into the activities of babies before birth, and the reassurance that a scan can bring. Generally, pregnant women will receive two ultrasound scans at their local NHS hospital; one at around twelve weeks and one at around 20 weeks.
The 12 week scan is used to accurately date the pregnancy whereas the 20 week scan is important for ensuring the baby is developing normally. However, Donna explains that for some women, additional opportunities to see their baby can provide much needed reassurance during what can sometimes be an anxious time. It can feel like a long wait between the 20 week scan and the arrival of baby at week Three dimensional ultrasound uses exactly the same harmless sound waves as traditional 2D scans, except they are sent from multiple angles.
When the waves reach the baby they are reflected back to a sophisticated computer system which uses the echoes to construct a 3D image of the baby in the womb. In 4D ultrasound scanning, this process is done in real time so that the baby can be seen moving and this can be captured as a video. Find out about the treatments offered at Bourn Hall.
